When a client wants risky tech fast, the assumption to test first is that they need it
A push for rapid adoption smuggles in a premise — that newer is better. Honoring the timeline starts with a focused risk check on the premise itself.
The advice I gave on LinkedIn: “When clients push for rapid adoption of new technology, focused risk assessments are essential to identify potential issues without delays. This approach helps us mitigate risks while respecting the client’s timeline. It’s crucial to remember that new technology isn’t always better; established solutions can offer more stability and reliability. Additionally, maintaining open communication fosters transparency and trust — regular updates on our progress and identified risks reassure clients that we are managing the situation effectively.”
That’s still how I’d handle it. The part worth surfacing is the quiet premise riding along inside the request.
When a client wants new technology adopted quickly, the request arrives with an assumption already baked in: that the new thing is the right thing, and speed is the only open question. That’s the premise worth checking first, because “new” and “better” are not the same property. A mature, boring solution often wins on exactly the dimensions a client under time pressure cares about most — stability, predictability, fewer surprises in production.
This is why the focused risk assessment matters more than a sprawling one. A push for speed makes a long process feel like obstruction, so the assessment has to be sharp: what specifically could go wrong with this technology, how likely, how recoverable. That respects the timeline instead of fighting it, and it often surfaces that the real risk isn’t the schedule — it’s adopting something unproven for a problem an established tool already solves.
And the communication piece is what makes any of this land. A client hears “let’s assess the risk” as “let’s slow down” unless you keep showing the work. Regular updates on what you’re finding turn risk management from a brake into a shared activity — so when you do recommend the boring option over the exciting one, it reads as protecting their interests, not resisting their idea.
